Service Description

This class will focus on six engineering projects and the concepts that go along with each build! This is a wonderful opportunity to explore a new learning opportunity and make new friends! At SEER we believe that consistency, hands on activities and a shared experience is one of the best ways to build community! WE are going to ask all the curious questions! Why are we creating this? How can we try making it a different way? How can we make our projects even better? We will focus on one main engineering concept each week and learning about different engineers and the amazing structures that they created! Lever - A lever is a rigid bar set on top of another object and it is used to move a heavy object by wedging one end under the object and applying weight to the opposite end. Wheel - a circular object usually attached to an axle Axle - a rod or spindle (either fixed or rotating) passing through the center of a wheel or group of wheels. Pulley - a wheel with a grooved rim around which a cord passes. It acts to change the direction of a force applied to the cord and is chiefly used (typically in combination) to raise heavy weights. Screw - a short, slender, sharp-pointed metal pin with a raised helical thread running around it and a slotted head, used to join things together by being rotated so that it pierces wood or other material and is held tightly in place. Inclined Plane - a sloping ramp up which heavy loads can be raised by ropes or chains. We have a list of recommendations to enhance this study at home that you will receive in January! Pre-Requisites: Children must be 4 by January 1, 2025 to participate. No writing or reading ability is needed. We are flexible with age requirements! Fees: This class will meet for six sessions. Each lesson will build upon itself. Class fees are $85 per student with a 30% sibling discount available. The full class fee is due when you sign up. If you need a different payment schedule please reach out to us at jessie@shoalseer.org. Maximum class size is 14 students. You can sign up for our entire Tuesday class block from 10:00am-12:30pm.
